FPL Top Picks for Gameweek 24
Week 23 saw a lot of goals and two hat tricks from two unlikely sources.
These goals caused upsets and a few near upsets, meaning that the overall average points tally of 57 meant that a lot of managers had players who produced good returns.
Another week is here. Let us dive in to see which players can assure the most points.
Gameweek analysis
Gameweek 25 is a double one, which means the upcoming gameweek 24 is your best opportunity to select double gameweek players.
Players from Manchester City, Brentford, Liverpool and Luton Town fit this description. However, you will have to consider their fixtures in gameweek 24 before you select any one of them.
City tackle Everton in week 24 and face off against Chelsea and Brentford in week 25. The Bees have Wolverhampton Wanderers in week 24 and face off against Liverpool and City in week 25.
Liverpool are up against Burnley in week 24 before going on to face Brentford and Luton. The Hatters will tackle Sheffield United in week 24 and in week 25, face Manchester United and Liverpool.
From this line up, it is a lot easier to streamline your picks for both weeks as you plan your week 24 squad with your eye on the double game week 25.
See the full fixture list for week 24 below.
Observant FPL players will realise that this is the reverse fixture list of gameweek 19, which took place last December.
Here’s what the results looked like from that week.
Take note that things have changed since then. Nottingham Forest do not look capable of pulling up the kind of upset they did at St James’ Park , which means betting on a hattrick from Chris Wood as a reason to pull him into your week 24 squad could be a waste of precious FPL transfer bucks.
Luton Town could get the double over Sheffield with a repeat performance of their week 19 outing. However, picks from the Hatters may have to be sacrificed for players who can guarantee good returns in week 25 when they face both Manchester United and Liverpool.
The safest top picks for week 24 – with respect to week 25 – will be Man City players who face Everton, Chelsea and Brentford in the next two game weeks.
For gameweek 24, City are also the second most likely team to bag two or more goals in week 24, while being the most likely to keep a clean sheet.
Arsenal do not have a high probability of scoring two or more goals in week 24 (they play West Ham United), but they rank high in xG (expected goals) alongside Liverpool.
The Reds have a double game week 25 which makes their players a choice pick for week 24, in which they face Burnley.
In terms of goals conceded, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford and Crystal Palace rank high in the xGC (expected goals conceded) metric. This means that most big chances created against them end up in the back of the net.
Their opponents are Brighton and Hove Albion (Spurs), Wolves (Brentford), Forest (Newcastle) and Chelsea (Crystal Palace).
Best FPL players for week 24
Richarlison (£7.2m) – Spurs
Richarlison is the league’s most in-form player at the moment, with nine goals from his last eight games in the Premier League.
All of them came as he took up the number 9 role in the team. This has helped him accumulate more FPL points (71) than every other player in this period (from gameweek 16 to date).
In week 24, Richarlison will play against Brighton, a team whose style encourages attacking play. They have conceded 38 goals this season and are 11th on the xGC chart with 35.3 goals. The Seagulls are also travelling to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium for this fixture.
Richarlison has been working on his finishing, clearly, and with Heung-Min Son back from international duty after crashing out of the Asian Cup with South Korea, the Lilywhites’ attacking prowess will greatly increase, which also means an increase in the number of chances that Richarlison will have to score.
Erling Haaland (£14.2m) – Manchester City
Erling Haaland is regaining his full fitness and is a shoo-in to start against Everton at the Etihad in week 24.
He is still the league’s top scorer and only needs one goal to pick up from where he left off before his injury. He may not score 36 goals like he did last season, but there is no clear pathway to the Golden Boot for any other player given how City have been playing.
The reverse fixture ended 3 – 1 in favour of the defending champions. Haaland was unavailable for the game, but his good record against Everton (two goals in two games) points to him getting on the scoresheet against the Toffees.
There is also no better game for him to find his scoring boots, which almost guarantees him a goal. More importantly, Haaland is City’s primary penalty taker, which increases his chances of scoring a goal if Sean Dyche’s side manage to keep him quiet from open play.
